Goods and Services Tax is woven into almost every commercial transaction in India. Whether you are a business owner raising invoices, a buyer trying to understand what you are actually paying, an accountant reconciling accounts, or a freelancer billing a client, getting the GST figures right is not optional.
An error in the GST amount on an invoice can create discrepancies in your tax filings and complicate input tax credit claims. This calculator eliminates the arithmetic so you always have the correct figures.
GST replaced a fragmented system of indirect taxes — VAT, Service Tax, Excise Duty, and others — with a single unified framework that came into effect on 1 July 2017. Under this system, every registered business collects GST on its sales, pays GST on its purchases, and remits the difference to the government. This mechanism — called input tax credit — ensures that tax is effectively paid only on the value added at each stage of the supply chain, not on the full transaction value at every step.
When a price is quoted exclusive of GST, the tax is calculated on top of the base amount and added to arrive at the invoice total. When a price is quoted inclusive of GST, the tax is already embedded in the figure — and the base amount must be extracted using the reverse calculation: Base Amount = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate). Knowing which applies to a given transaction is essential before raising or reconciling any invoice.
Exclusive: GST is added on top of base price.
Inclusive: GST is already included in total price.
Base Amount = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate)ITC is only claimable when the GST paid on a purchase appears in the supplier's GSTR-1 return and matches your own GSTR-2B. Discrepancies — even those caused by a supplier filing late — can result in the credit being denied until the mismatch is resolved. This makes accurate invoice figures and timely reconciliation critical for any GST-registered business.

A GST calculator helps you calculate GST amount, CGST, SGST, and total price instantly.
Take your base amount, multiply it by the applicable GST rate, then divide by 100. A ₹1,000 product at 18% GST adds ₹180 in tax, making the total invoice amount ₹1,180.
Base Amount = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + GST rate).
On a ₹1,000 base amount, 18% GST comes to ₹180 — split equally between CGST (₹90) and SGST (₹90) for intra-state transactions, or charged as a single IGST of ₹180 for inter-state supply..
